Preparing young people for real-world success is at the heart of what we do at Breaking Through Roadblocks (BTR). Recently, participants in the T.A.R.G.E.T.S. program for boys took part in a hands-on Job Interview Workshop designed to build confidence, professionalism, and practical life skills.
The workshop brought together young men ages 13 to 24, giving them the opportunity to learn what it takes to make a strong impression during a job interview. While many of the participants are still years away from their first formal job interview, the goal of the session was to introduce real-world expectations early and help them develop habits that will benefit them throughout their lives. They were encouraged to dress for the occasion.
Learning the Fundamentals of Professional Interviews
During the workshop, participants explored the key elements that employers look for when meeting potential candidates. Mentors and facilitators walked the young men through several important topics, including:
Communication skills: speaking clearly, confidently, and respectfully
Professional attire: understanding how appearance affects first impressions
Attendance and punctuality: the importance of showing up prepared and on time
Company preparation:
researching and understanding the organization before the interview
Body language: eye contact, posture, handshakes, and nonverbal communication
Answering questions thoughtfully: learning how to express ideas clearly and honestly
These lessons helped participants understand that interviewing is not just about answering questions it’s about presenting themselves as responsible, thoughtful, and prepared individuals.
Mock Interviews for Real-World Practice
The highlight of the workshop was a series of mock interviews, where each T.A.R.G.E.T.S. member sat down for a simulated interview experience.
During these interviews, participants were evaluated on multiple criteria, including their communication, preparation, body language, professionalism, and overall confidence. This allowed mentors to provide constructive feedback and guidance on how each participant could improve.
For many of the young men, this was their first experience sitting in a formal interview setting, making it an invaluable learning opportunity.
Building Confidence for the Future
By practicing in a supportive environment, the participants were able to step outside their comfort zones and gain confidence in their ability to present themselves professionally. The exercise also helped them begin thinking about their future careers, goals, and the steps needed to achieve them.
Experiences like this are exactly what the T.A.R.G.E.T.S. program is designed to provide—real-world learning opportunities that prepare young people for success beyond the classroom.
Investing in the Next Generation
At Breaking Through Roadblocks (BTR), our mission is to ensure that the young people in our community are equipped with the tools, mentorship, and confidence they need to thrive.
Workshops like this job interview training are just one example of how the T.A.R.G.E.T.S. program is helping young men develop leadership, responsibility, and life skills that will serve them for years to come.
We are proud of every participant who stepped forward, accepted the challenge, and gave their best effort.
BTR remains committed to preparing the young people of our community to do great things.
